WDH’s oldest resident celebrates his 106th birthday

Published 21 June 2016

George Storry is one of Wakefield Districts oldest men and has celebrated his 106th birthday.

Mr Storry, who is WDH’s oldest resident was born on June 17 1910, just after George V became the King of England.

He currently lives at WDH’s Musgrave Court Independent Living Scheme in Lupset having moved from Fitzwilliam where he used to tend his two allotments. George only gave up riding his bike at the age of 95 but says thankfully he doesn’t suffer from any aches or pains and having worked for many years as a miner at Nostell Colliery.

George currently lives around the corner from his step-daughter, Jean Atack who visits him three times a week. Jean was there to celebrate with George on Friday along with other family members and friends.

When asked what his secret to a long life was, he said: “Keeping healthy and always being happy.”

Dave Thorpe, WDH’s Senior Independent Living Officer, said: “George is a true gent and it was so rewarding to be able to represent the organisation and share in this special birthday celebration. This is a fantastic achievement that our Community Support Worker service is recognised by his family as a huge contributor to allowing him to remain and live independently and in his own home; without having to make the transition in to residential care.”
