WDH raises funds for Hospice2 May 2019

Published 2 May 2019
WDH has raised an impressive £1,605 for Wakefield Hospice as part of the Hospice’s annual 10k Road Race Corporate Challenge. A team of 28 employees took on the challenge, organised by the charity to raise much needed funds to help provide palliative and end of life care to patients. Jamie Strachan, Events Fundraiser and organiser of the 10k race said: “For us the Wakefield 10k is our biggest event and the Corporate Challenge is a great way for businesses across the district to get involved. We are committed to inclusivity, hence why we have a funding target rather than a race time target. We began the Corporate Challenge back in 2017 and we have raised £35,000 so far.” He added: “75% of funding has to come from the public and year in and year out, people from Wakefield come out to support us. While we can’t add days to life, we can add life to days, providing a home from home experience and every little contribution matters. This contribution from WDH will help tremendously.” Joanne Biltcliffe, OneCALL Manager at WDH led the group and said: “We’re thrilled we have managed to exceed our £1,000 target. The 10k Road Race is a great way of getting employees fit and active and at the same time giving something back by providing much needed funds to the Hospice.”

One resident said: “I made my two daughters an Easter card each. It’s not something that I would usually do but it would have been a shame to pass on this opportunity.” Claire Secker, Tenant Involvement Officer, said: “It’s nice to see the residents come together and help one another. We urge everyone to get involved in any events that are held and it’s nice to see so many people enjoying themselves.”

Working with Young People 2016: Rycroft Youth Club

Published 3 November 2016

Rycroft Youth Club took the Working With Young People Award in WDH’s 2016 Love Where You Live Awards.

Rycroft Youth Club is based in Ryhill and offers a place for local children to go. The Youth Club runs four sessions per week for children aged 8 to 19 years old. The club provides a safe space for young people to meet and socialise as well as providing a diversion from crime and anti-social behaviour.

The Youth Club offers a variety of fun activities for children and young people to take part in and also has services to support older children with looking for work and writing their CV’s. The club is run by volunteers and relies on them to help keep it open. They also encourage their older members to volunteer to help the younger children.

On winning the award, Isaac, a young volunteer at the youth club said, “We’re happy, proud and overwhelmed to have won! Thank you to everyone for voting, it’s appreciated by all of our staff and volunteers. Our prize money will be invested into new resources for our group.”
