Provide your views on urgent care at Pontefract Hospital with Healthwatch Wakefield24 July 2017

Published 24 July 2017
As part of the work that WDH does with partner organisations, we are helping Healthwatch Wakefield collect local people’s views on the services that are provided at Pontefract Hospital. They also would like to know what type of urgent care services you think could be provided there. The reason they are asking this now is that the contract to deliver urgent care at Pontefract Hospital is due for renewal next year so there is an opportunity to review the service. No decisions have been made yet about urgent care at Pontefract Hospital, as NHS Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Group believes the public should help shape the service. Healthwatch Wakefield is an independent organisation and wants to collect as many views as possible. If you would like to find out more and take the short survey please go to their website news section or click here.

Chinwag Club stays open with WDH Community Grant11 July 2017

Published 11 July 2017
Members of the Chinwag Club are delighted to be able to carry on with their activities thanks to a grant of £1500 from WDH.   The Club, for people over 50, meets every Monday afternoon at Balne Lane  Community Centre. The Club provides an opportunity for older people to make friends and keep active. The group play bingo, cards and do chair based exercises. They often organise guest speakers and people to teach a variety of crafts and activities. Violet Chaltone, one member of the Club said: "It can feel really lonely when you live on your own. I enjoy coming to the Club for company. This is my regular activity to look forward every week." Chris Croxall, Tenant Involvement Officer at WDH said: "The area needs more organisations like Chinwag Club. Some of the members are disabled or on low income and the Club gives them a chance to socialise. By coming together regularly it improves the quality of life and avoids isolation. " The grant will help them to pay towards the annual rent and the cost of running the Club. The club always welcomes new members. If you would like to join or know someone who would be interested, please contact Balne Lane Community Centre on 01924 373558. Applications for WDH Community Grant Scheme will be open again on 7 August 2017. For more information please visit http://www.wdh.co.uk/OurCommunities.

Working with Older People 2016: Ann Bond

Published 2 November 2016

Ann Bond won the Working With Older People category in WDH’s 2016 Love Where You Live Awards.

Ann Bond has been running The Bereavement Group in South Kirkby for 14 years. The group is open to anyone who has lost a loved one and has over 80 members. They have weekly meetings to decide what outings or activities to arrange and meet socially to have a meal and play bingo.

The group aims to support people who have lost a loved one and help them to regain their confidence and learn how to live happily again. Not only do they have regular local events, they also plan an annual cruise and other short breaks for members. The group gives its members a purpose and helps to reduce social isolation that can often be caused by the death of a partner or friend.

On winning the award, Ann said: “I’m absolutely gob smacked! I don’t feel like I do anything special so to deserve an award but it feels fantastic. It makes all the hard work worthwhile, I really didn’t expect to win!”
