Gender pay gap report 202010 May 2021

WDH has published its gender pay gap report for 2020 which shows the difference in average earnings between men and women in its organisation. The fourth report to be published, demonstrates a slight narrowing in the mean gender pay gap to 13.3% compared to last year.

Former Pontefract fire station site set to be transformed into apartments in plans submitted to Wakefield Council4 May 2021

WDH has submitted plans to transform the former fire station site on Stuart Road, Pontefract into 37 residential apartments. The planning application forms part of the delivery of Wakefield Council’s Reconnecting Pontefract Masterplan.

WDH invests £680,000 on improvements to Airedale properties28 April 2021

WDH continues to improve its local neighbourhoods across the Wakefield district with the completion of £680,000 of environmental improvements to properties on Hawes Close in Airedale. This is part of WDH’s wider multi-million-pound investment planned across the district to improve communities.

In line with the Government’s roadmap to ease lockdown restrictions, we are beginning the gradual restoration of our housing services, which we had previously scaled back, to keep our customers and employees safe. On Monday, 29 March 2021, we are reintroducing, in a safe and considered way, a full repair and maintenance service for our customers and at the same time will be gradually increasing more face to face interactions, including home visits.

Despite ongoing coronavirus restrictions, volunteers across the Wakefield district have been out maintaining the parks and greenspaces for everyone in their local communities to enjoy. Through our Communities Together Agreement, our Engagement team in partnership with Tivoli Group Limited, our ground’s maintenance contractors, have been proud to be able to contribute to the amazing work of these green fingered volunteers. Together we have donated over 30 litter pickers and other gardening equipment to support the maintenance of these wonderful spaces.

    Since lock down started in March, I have been moved by the way the district and particularly WDH and you our customers have come together to support each other at this challenging time. Many of our employees have been continuing to work supporting you, our tenants, whilst spending their free time sewing scrubs, face masks and kit bags, to support our NHS and care home workers, making sure the most vulnerable in our community are able to be cared for. Our employees have also gone above and beyond to support local foodbanks and other charity services to offer provisions in addition to food such as milk and boxes for distributing food parcels. I have seen much community spirit over the past weeks and it makes me exceptionally proud

    We have recently seen a few incidents across the district involving garden fires. Due to the coronavirus outbreak Wakefield Council have taken the decision to suspend the collection of garden waste in order to maintain normal household and recycling waste collections.

    The bank holiday and extended weekend will soon be upon us and, with the good weather we’ve been having, it is tempting for all of us to stretch the guidance a little bit to visit family, join friends in the garden or visit some of our local parks. However, I must urge you continue to support our NHS and follow the advice that has been given.

    For those of us who are currently self-isolating and having to spend more time at home, it may be of some relief to hear that the government has pledged to support people with energy costs during this time. There will be specific arrangements put in place for those on pre-payment meters struggling with the implications of the Coronavirus, as well as energy customers facing financial distress. Whilst I appreciate there is a lot more to consider at the moment, I hope this relieves at least some of the worries you might have.

    Springhills Independent Living Scheme’s longest resident is over the moon with her home’s new look

    Doris Cornick, 95, has recently moved back to her newly renovated flat at WDH’s Springhills Independent Living Scheme in Outwood.

    Doris, the scheme’s longest resident has lived there for 32 years and moved in when the scheme was first built.

    She said: “It’s fantastic, it has been worth the wait and I am over the moon with it. I’ve always loved living here even when it wasn’t as posh as this.”

    Springhills has undergone an extensive refurbishment, completely modernising the scheme inside and out, including the addition of three scooter rooms, a salon and a spa room.

    She also added: “I moved into Independent Living after having multiple heart attacks. My doctor said that I needed a home without steps and we saw Springills being built and applied. Sadly, I lost my husband a few years after moving in but it really helped to have the support of my friends here.”

    The scheme in Outwood is just a bus ride from Wakefield town centre and has lots of local conveniences like shops, clubs, churches and  chemists nearby.

    Springhills is made up of self-contained one bedroom flats, each wired with WDH's Care Link emergency contact system, ensuring help is on hand 24 hours a day. Access to the communal entrance at Springhills is through a secure key system keeping residents safe.

    The Scheme Manager is available to provide extra support and peace of mind and residents receive regular visits and calls to check on their wellbeing, these can be arranged to suit.

    WDH’s Independent Living Schemes also offer a range of social activities for residents including coffee mornings, bingo and more.

    Doris said: “It’s like living in a holiday home with your friends! There is always something going on in the lounge and it’s lovely to see people or just stay in your flat and have friends over. Its nice to have a choice.”
