Digital in the Community Winner 2017: Kirkthorpe Community Group

Published 11 October 2017

Kirkthorpe Community Group took the Digital in the Community Award in WDH’s 2017 Love Where You Live Awards.

Kirkthorpe Community Group is WDH’s first ever digital community group. The residents of Kirkthorpe in Wakefield wanted to form a community group but due to families working different shifts, other commitments and language barriers it seemed almost impossible to arrange a regular meeting. So the group set up a Facebook page for members where everyone, even,  non-English speaking residents, could get involved. Between 10 and 20 people now physically meet on a monthly basis with over 88 residents having joined the Facebook group to voice their opinion online. The group also allows them to promote events within their community and they have planned their first family fun day for September.

On winning the award Sally Evans said, “We’re over the moon to have won. The support from the local community has been amazing. We will put our prize money towards a community event for the whole village.”
