Children from DeLacy Primary School and Carleton Park Junior and Infant School joined residents at Halberg House and Eastbourne Independent Living Scheme for carols and Christmas cheer. Residents sat back and enjoyed listening to the children sing favourites like including Jingle Bells and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Some even joined in! One resident said: “Listening to the children sing fills us all with happiness and lifts our festive spirits. I look forward to this event every year.”

Scouts group perform for residents at Silkstone Court17 December 2018

Children from 1st Altofts Scout group - spanning Beavers, Cubs and Scouts - entertained residents at Silkstone Court on Thursday with festive Christmas songs. The residents enjoyed classics such as Jingle Bells and Walking In A Winter Wonderland, joining in as the children sang. “The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts really enjoyed their evening with the residents of Silkstone Court, and the residents seemed to relish the chance for a good old sing-song. It just goes to show that you’re never too old to enjoy singing Jingle Bells!” said Kim Hiscocks, Scout Leader.

From today (Wednesday 28 November 2018) Universal Credit (UC) Full Service is being rolled out across the Wakefield district. UC replaces six benefits with a single monthly payment similar to a monthly working wage. The six benefits being replaced are: Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance Income-related Employment and Support Allowance Income Support Child Tax Credits Working Tax Credits Housing Benefit From today, you will need to claim UC if you are making a new benefit claim and are of working age. You might also need to claim UC if your circumstances change. Are you ready? It could take five weeks to receive your first payment so it’s important you act quickly when making your claim. Speed up the process by making sure you’re prepared now. We’ve put together some handy guidance on how you can make sure you’re UC ready. Digital in the Community: Friends of Fryston Woods

Friends of Fryston Woods Group took the Digital in the Community Award in WDH’s 2018 Love Where You Live Awards.

Friends of Fryston Woods have embraced Facebook in order to promote their activities and reach the community they work in. They now have almost 800 followers on their page and this year they have also created an Instagram page and are slowly building up followers. The group has used social media to promote the honey they are selling for a second year and used a local business, Bake my Day, who also use social media successfully to help sell this. The used their business initiative to engage with a local influencer on Instagram and his promotion of the honey on his Instagram account allowed them to sell their full supply of honey. The group also run a Fryston Memories Facebook page to promote the heritage of the Fryston community and engage with local people in the area.

On winning the award Steve Wright said, “We would like to thank every single person who has helped us on our journey whether that be volunteering, attending events, purchasing our honey, or supporting us in other ways. Also, a massive thank you to everyone who voted for us too, winning this award gives us the motivation to keep going and growing. The LWYL Awards is a fantastic way of bringing hardworking community groups and people together to showcase what we can achieve together. We were all winners on the night."
