Rachel Speak won the Community Champion category in WDH’s 2016 Love Where You Live Awards.
Rachel has gone over and above to make a huge difference to the community in Ferrybridge and the surrounding areas. She ensures that Ferrybridge Community Centre is always open and has different groups running.
Since she took over she has organised a mum and toddler group for local mums to attend to meet new people. Rachel also organises the Christmas light switch on and puts in a great deal of effort to ensure it is an event the whole community can enjoy. She promotes the centre on social media which allows ideas and information to be shared in the wider community.
On winning the award, she said: “It's a wonderful feeling that all the tiresome hours I put in are acknowledged. The time I put in is endless and it feels very much appreciated . I have a lot of voluntary staff who help when and if needed, to which I'm so grateful. We are a self-run place where as long as I can pay the bills the centre stays open so it does mean endless voluntary work for all involved and they are key to me being able to keep the centre going.
“The money I have won could be used in so many ways. We are in the process of organising our light switch on for all the community and would love lights round the building as it's the focal point so could be used to get them, or I could treat all the people who work endless hours for free to a nice meal out as a way to thank them. It was a privilege to be involved and a privilege to be voted the winner. We have a fantastic community here in Ferrybridge and Knottingley and I will strive to keep this centre going as long as I can.”
