This year WDH is celebrating 10 years of its annual Love Where You Live awards which recognises young achievers and community heroes in the Wakefield district who make a positive difference to their communities.
Over the last decade, WDH has seen over 80 winners, hundreds of nominees and hundreds of thousands of votes cast for our past and present Love Where You Live community champions.
WDH is inviting the public to nominate community heroes for the hard work they put in to make the Wakefield district a better place to live, especially over the last 12 months, during the pandemic.
This year, the contest will feature eight categories, with each of the shortlisted finalists in with the chance of winning a cash prize of £200, £100 or £50 thanks to our sponsors Tivoli.
Last year, the awards were hosted digitally and WDH received over 50 nominations and over 18,500 votes for their finalists. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the first ever digital awards final was held on Facebook with over 2,500 people tuning in to watch the ceremony and help celebrate the 2020 champions.
The Well Project won the Community Group Award in 2020. During the coronavirus outbreak, The Well Project acted as a Community Hub for those in need of support. They have 63 volunteers who, between them, have given over 26,000 hours of their time to help those who needed it most.
Michelle, from The Well Project, said: “We were so excited and proud to be nominated in the category of Best Community Group in last year’s awards. We were absolutely delighted to have won, it meant a lot to all of us here at The Well, to know we are thought so highly of by people who voted for us. We used our prize money to help create youth packs for young people during the school holidays so the money will help to provide these, along with the food donations.”
WDH Chief Executive, Andy Wallhead, added: “Our Love Where You Live Awards are a community-wide celebration of people who make the Wakefield district one to be proud of. They become more popular every year.
“Last year, set against the backdrop of a global pandemic, we had more votes than ever before, which showed how strong and resilient our communities are. It is so important that we continue to celebrate the hard work and dedication that people put into making our neighbourhoods friendlier, safer and more enjoyable places to live. If ever there was a time to celebrate the achievements of people in our neighbourhoods, this is it. You can nominate yourself or anyone you think deserves recognition for their efforts.”
