£25,000 awarded to Wakefield’s community heroes 27 June 2022

Over the last 11 years, Yorkshire’s largest social housing provider, WDH has given £25,000 to over 90 inspirational community groups and individuals through the Love Where You Live awards. The awards recognise young achievers and community heroes in the Wakefield district who make a positive difference to their communities. WDH is now inviting the public to nominate even more community heroes for the hard work they put in to make the Wakefield district a better place to live.

Pontefract Decoration Squad’s creative efforts celebrated26 November 2021

Pontefract Decoration Squad were crowned our Arts and Culture winners at our 10th Love Where You Live Awards grand final held at Pontefract Racecourse. Pontefract Decoration Squad started as a group to help decorate Pontefract for the Tour de Yorkshire. Since then, they have created designs from painting waste drink bottles to create stunning displays using wire and netting around Pontefract for Remembrance Sunday, Yorkshire Day, VE Day and the Liquorice Festivals.

The Wakefield Community Choir were our winners of the Digital in the Community Award at our 10th Love Where You Live Awards held at Pontefract Racecourse on Friday, 12 November 2021. The Community Choir Wakefield, is an inclusive, non-auditioned community choir for the district which has adopted digital technology such as Skype and Zoom to rehearse and perform online during the pandemic

The Addy in Knottingley did the double for the second year running and took home two more awards at our Love Where You Live Awards 2021. They took home the award for Working with Young People and their Wild Tots and Friends intergenerational work scooped the award for Working with Older People.

Alba Stogden – a little girl on a mission18 November 2021

Seven year old Alba was crowned our 2021 Young Achiever at this year’s Love Where You Live Awards. Alba tackled her lockdown anxiety by going out on litter picks each day around Pontefract with her mum. She is a little girl on a mission to make the world a cleaner, safer and happier place. This year, Alba has walked hundreds of miles and helped to raise thousands of pounds for mental health charities and is now on with her next challenge to walk one million steps for the Yorkshire-based charity IDAS that supports people affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence.

Tenants, residents and community groups from across the Wakefield district were among the winners at WDH’s tenth Love Where You Live award celebration at Pontefract Racecourse. A record breaking 20,372 votes, over 2,000 more than last year, were cast for this year’s outstanding contestants who have contributed to their local communities in remarkable ways. Winners ranged from volunteers who used their own time to clean up their neighbourhoods to young achievers who go the extra mile to help others as well as people who want to bring their communities together through a variety of groups and events.
