Working life

After only a few months our apprentices have settled into their new roles and are enjoying taking on new challenges.

Sasha Timson, an office-based apprentice working in the Communications Team, has been spending the first few months of the programme working in marketing and events.

"I’ve really been enjoying it," says Sasha. Everyone’s been friendly and welcomed me into the team. I’ve settled in well and have already learned a lot.

It’s been a hectic yet exciting time for Sasha as she settled into her new role and took on the challenge of helping organise the Employee Conference and the Garden Awards. Sasha’s writing and design skills have also been put to the test as part of her role involves producing leaflets to promote WDH events and services.

"We’ve got lots of exciting things coming up in the next few months so I’m pleased about getting involved and developing my skills."

Daniel Withington, a bricklayer apprentice based at the Castleford depot, says: "I’ve been learning a lot. I have been re-building walls and making them look neater. I have also been working on ramps and re-building steps. Hopefully I’ll soon be involved in new build."

Daniel previously worked as a machine operator for a print company and applied for the apprenticeship programme to combine work with training.

"I had a few different jobs before joining WDH," says Daniel. "But I never thought they would lead anywhere. When I saw the WDH advertisement I thought it would be a good opportunity. I want a qualification in my trade but also a career at the end of it. It would be great to move up the organisation."

Daniel currently attends Leeds College of Building on block release to study for his bricklaying qualifications. Gary Marley, from the Regeneration team, is delighted with Daniel’s progress.

"Daniel is very proactive in developing the various skills needed to progress his career," says Gary. "I wish him well with his apprenticeship and his future goals."
