What does the service charge pay for?

Service charges vary depending on where you live and the different types of buildings you live in, but in general they may cover such things as:

  1. Caretaking and cleaning - services provided to the multi-storey blocks, including caretakers and cleaners, rubbish collection and cleaning materials.
  2. Communal electricity - staircase lighting, TV aerials and other electrical facilities within the communal area of the building.
  3. Lifts - maintenance, insurance and telephones within the lifts provided in communal areas.
  4. Insurance - the cost to WDH of providing the insurance cover for the building you live in (please note that this covers the building only – you need to arrange your own contents insurance).
  5. Repairs and maintenance – the cost of repairs to communal areas of the building you live in, and the cost of any communal painting works following any major programmed works to your property.
  6. Environmental works - the cost of grass cutting and ground works on the communal areas of land surrounding your property.
  7. Management fee – this is a flat fee, which covers the cost of providing leasehold services and dealing with leasehold management issues for all employees within WDH.
