Compensation for improvements
When your tenancy ends, you may have the right to claim compensation for certain improvements you have made to your home, if those improvements were made with our permission and to our satisfaction.
If you are planning to improve your home, and want to find out more about claiming compensation at the end of your tenancy, you should contact your local Service Access Point to check what work the compensation scheme covers. You will have to keep any receipts, details of the work and a note of the date you did it.
The work you do will, of course, suffer some wear and tear over time. Because of this, the amount of compensation you receive reduces by a set formula over time (from the date the improvement was carried out) until, after a set number of years for each job, you don't get anything at all.
So, for example, you would get more compensation if you put in a new toilet one year before your tenancy ended than if you put it in eight years before it ended.
You must claim any compensation for improvements in writing either within your four-week notice period or up to two weeks after you have left.
