Home security
You can help reduce the risk of crime by following some basic steps to protect yourself and your home. Some of the steps are simple, but they can make a real difference.
A lot of burglaries can be prevented. They are often spur of the moment where a burglar may see an open window or other easy point of entry and takes a chance.
handy tips
- When you go out lock the door and close the windows – even if you are only going out for a short time.
- Never leave a spare key in a hiding place like under a doormat or inside the letterbox – a thief will look there first.
- Remember to remove keys from locked windows and keep them out of sight in a safe place.
- Visible burglar alarms and carefully directed security lighting can put burglars off.
- Keep all valuables out of sight.
- Leave a light on inside the house when you are away from home to create the impression that someone is in. Choose well-used rooms such as the living room or bedroom.
- If possible, use timer switches for lights and radio’s if you are away from home for longer periods.
- Be alert to strangers loitering in residential streets. If you see anyone acting suspiciously then contact the Police.
Garages and sheds
Garages and sheds can be full of expensive tools, which are ideal for breaking into the rest of the house.
handy tips
- Never leave a garage or garden shed unlocked.
- Lock ladders inside your garage or shed to stop a thief using them to reach upstairs windows. If there is no room in your garage or shed, chain or padlock them horizontally to a sturdy bracket on an outside wall.
