Estate Walks 2010

After the success of the 2009 estate walks WDH have decided to run more events this year. View a list of the estate walks planned for 2010.

Community Groups and Tenants and Residents Associations

Please note that most groups will require you to contact them first, rather simply turning up at a meeting.

These groups meet within the area that they represent and are run by voluntary committee members. They discuss local issues that affect residents within their estate or area and work with WDH and Wakefield Council to improve them. They also work on various projects such as estate clean up days, youth activities and run events to get the community together.

WDH provide support to new and existing community groups by helping with training for committee members, printing of flyers and minutes, broadband internet access and computer and provide ongoing funding and information through regular bulletins

If you would like to attend a meeting of a community group listed below or would like further information, please contact your Tenant Involvement Officer.

Examples of what LMC members discuss at meetings include our improvement programme, local area performance around lettings and arrears, tenant involvement and new projects. Full training and ongoing support is provided.

Area Housing Forum

Your Local Management Committee Chair will also chair this quarterly meeting. The venue is rotated around Knottingley, Pontefract and Featherstone and all who live on WDH estates are welcome. The Area Management Team attend the meeting to give information on local projects such as environmental improvements and an update on the house modernisation programme is given. Residents can discuss local issues and request special guests to speak at meetings, such as the Police. If you are interested in attending the Area Housing Forum, please contact your Tenant Involvement Officer.

Engagement with young people

We realise that young people do not often want to sit in a meeting so we try to engage in project-based work or through activities. Many of our community groups work with their young people and support youth groups. Huntwick and Verner Tenants and Residents Association run the highly successful Huntwick and Verner Kids Group and arrange seasonal parties for them.

Environmental Improvements

The majority of environmental improvements will follow the modernisation programme to the houses. We consult with residents and give example plans so that the local community’s opinion can be gathered.

We work with Groundwork Wakefield on Groundwork Blueprint estate plans where community consultation is key. Groundwork have completed a scheme on the Carleton Glen estate, Pontefract which included redesigning green open space into a park area and boundary fencing.
