Involving Young People
Wakefield and District Housing are keen to engage with the young people who live on our estates, and have worked on a number of projects with local schools and community groups to do this. Ossett Holy Trinity School - Name the Street competition
Ossett Holy Trinity School got involved in the Northfield Road new build site by taking part in a street naming competition. Five names were chosen as finalists, with the winning name, "Wells Way" being submitted by Hannah Empsall.

Denby Grange Cricket Club - Community Grant
The Overton-based club can now offer more youngsters the chance to play cricket locally, after receiving a community grant for £334. This money was used to buy Kwik Cricket equipment, which will enable the club to encourage younger players to take part in the sport.

Fairfield Avenue community garden
WDH have been working closely with the gardening club from South Parade Primary School to develop a small community garden for the residents of Fairfield Avenue in Ossett. Pupils worked hard to clear the area of leaves and debris, and have planted spring flowers including snowdrops, daffodils, and crocuses to improve the outlook for local residents.

Michaelmas Children's Centre Teddy Bears Picnic
Different partners, including WDH, Health Trainers, and the 5 a Day Team attended the fun event at Michaelmas Children's Centre to give information and advice to parents from around the Flanshaw area. The children made healthy wraps to enjoy for lunch, as well as making animals and models from raw vegetables. Children were encouraged to bring their own teddy bears and picnics and the day was a great success.

St George's Family Fun Day
WDH had an information stand at a family fun day organised by St George's Community Centre in Lupset. Other activities at the event included a bouncy castle, face painting, science experiments, and different craft tables. WDH ran a colouring competition, with all entries being placed in the 2009 Summer Roadshow draw.

Gawthorpe Community Primary School - Site Safety session and Poster competition
WDH worked with Bullock Construction to hold a site safety talk at the school, and to run a "health and safety in the home" poster competition for all pupils. The winning poster was chosen at the end of the talk, and the top three entries received vouchers. The winning poster is going to be used in all Bullock comfort homes and site cabins during WDH's improvement programme.
