Allotments

Growing your own fruit and vegetables means you not only get fresh, great-tasting seasonal produce but save money as well. And you do your bit for the environment, helping to reduce the pollution and energy use from transport and packaging of shop-bought food.

If you don’t have a garden but want to grow your own fruit, vegetables or flowers, an allotment might be the answer.

WDH owns five separate allotment sites around the District. Each of these sites is made up of individual plots which can be rented by local residents.

The sites are:

How much will it cost?

Allotment rents currently vary between £15 and £45 per annum, depending on the size of the plot. The rental figures for each are reviewed on annual basis.

For sites where water is provided, an additional water charge will payable. The amount is provided and assessed by Yorkshire Water, and will be detailed on the ststements for each plot.

A discount of 50% off the annual rent applies to tenants over the age of 60.

How long does it take?

As allotments are very popular, waiting lists are put in place for each site managed by WDH. When you call and indicate your interest in aquiring a plot, your name will be added to the waiting list for your desired site(s). Expression of interest are logged in date order. As and when plots become available, the person at the top of the list, who has been waiting longest, will be provided with an application form. This will need to be completed and sent to Wakefield and District Housing, Merefield House, Whistler Drive, Castleford, WF10 5HX.

Due to high demand for plot tenancies and the low number of tenancies being given up, you might have to wait for at least 12 months before being allocated a plot.

Plot Tenancy Agreement

Once you have been allocated your allotment plot, we will send you a tenancy agreement form explaining the terms and conditions for using the plot. You'll need to sign and return this to us to finalise the agreement.
