Sustainable development

The warmth, shelter and safety of a home is a basic human need, but the construction and use of housing can harm our environment.

The use of inappropriate materials, destruction of natural habitats, pollution and excessive use of energy and water all cause damage.

But it doesn’t have to be like this. With careful design, construction and use, affordable, good quality housing can reduce environmental impact at little or no extra cost. It can also reduce maintenance costs and energy and water costs for residents.

This approach is known as sustainable development – and it is all about creating a better quality of life for residents now and in the future.

Wakefield and District Housing works to ensure that any new development we undertake is going to be sustainable, both in the short and long term.
