An initiative that’s supported more than 1,500 local young people to raise their aspirations is celebrating its 10 year anniversary.
Launched in 2006, WDH’s Community Leadership Programme offers schoolchildren from across the Wakefield district the opportunity to go on a five-day residential trip which includes activities designed to encourage teamwork, confidence and communication skills. During their time away pupils go camping, take part in obstacle courses, try rock climbing and do other challenging tasks with the support from a group of WDH employees who act as mentors.
Speaking about the programme’s success, Sharon Poole, WDH’s Social Inclusion Manager, said: “The kind of experience we offer helps bring out the very best in young people because they learn in a different environment away from home. Working in partnership with all 18 high schools we deliver a range of opportunities including work experience, mock interviews, apprenticeships and enterprise days. We’re delighted to be able to continue supporting the development of future community leaders."
The Community Leadership Programme is delivered in partnership with the Outward Bound Trust in Aberdovey in Wales or Ullswater in the Lake District.
