A Wakefield foodbank has received a generous donation from a WDH tenant group.
Carr House Tenants and Residents Association was awarded £30 of Sainsbury’s vouchers after being entered into a prize draw for completing a WDH and Communities Together Tenants and Residents Association Support Survey.
The group decided to donate the winnings to the foodbank at St Catherine’s Church Centre in Belle Vue – but their generosity extended even further after they also donated dozens of tins of food as well as bags of pasta and a giant box of tea bags, as well as adding £10 more in cash to the £30 vouchers.
Around 80 people currently use the St Catherine’s foodbank every week, but Centre Manager Lisa Grant said that figure almost doubled to around 150 in the winter.
“The number of people who use the centre fluctuates, and while at the moment it’s around 80 a week we expect that to rise in the school holidays because lots of children get free school meals, but once this stops many won’t get a hot meal every day.
“Donations like this one from Carr House are so important and we’re extremely grateful to them for their generosity in helping those who rely on these donations to eat.”
Chris Croxall, Tenant Involvement Officer at WDH, said: “The decision taken by Carr House Tenants and Residents Association to not just donate their prize to the foodbank, but add to it, is a fabulous gesture and I know it will be gratefully received and appreciated by those who use the foodbank.”
