Green Corridor Project, Upton
Refurbished in conjunction with WDH Construction
The Green Corridor Programme is the long term partnership of Barnsley, Doncaster and Wakefield Councils,
who have come together to improve the former coalfield communities across the three authorities.
The overall aim of the programme is to transform these neighbourhoods of low demand, poor environment and poor
quality housing through various initiatives across these areas.
WDH were approached by Wakefield Council to buy back and improve some properties for
sale in the South-East of the district as part of this programme.
The village of Upton and in particular the old National Coal Board community around Smeaton Road
were chosen as it is an area with high levels of private landlords and a plentiful supply of
properties prime for redevelopment.
Boundary Plan of the Green Corridor Programme
A Project Team was set up to manage this programme from initial purchase through modernisation and finally
to sale. Four properties were initially purchased and WDH’s Construction Team successfully won the tender to
modernise these properties.
The modernisation included full re-wiring, double glazing, new kitchens, bathrooms,
heating systems, cavity wall and loft insulation, as well as a pilot of the 'Hydropave' system which looks to
increase the permeability of the off-street drives to restrict the impact that rainfall has to the drainage system,
this was installed due to the issues surrounding flooding in the area.
WDH has modernised all four properties and they are now available to purchase through WH Brown's estate agents.
A photographic timeline has been included below, which shows the transformation of the properties throughout their development.
